TALLITOT AT AUSCHWITZ

In 1996 I responded to a "call for tallises" from activist Ginni Stern who was involved in Bearing Witness Retreats held at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. I sent her ten--- a minyan's worth--- which she distributed as she saw appropriate.

Ginni sent me this photograph.

Several years later I traveled to Poland and not only visited Auschwitz, but I met a Polish woman who had been a recipient of a tallit. At the time we met, she carried it with her at all times while she unearthed the story of her hidden Jewish roots.
