Silkpainting Process

silkpainting with nancy
  1. Stretch the silk on a frame.
  2. Use the "magic purple pen" to plan out design (& trust that it will disappear!).
  3. Apply resist around edge, just inside frame.
  4. Apply resist to silk to create design. Let resist dry (a few minutes is OK; overnight is better).
  5. Apply "paint" with brushes (it's actually a dye made specifically for silk). Colors dry lighter than they appear.
Have fun blending colors, and creative problem solving when need be!!! Remember to breathe!
  6. Rinse brushes with warm water.
  7. Let artwork dry thoroughly.
  8. Steam set the silk so that the color remains permanent.
  9. Dryclean the silk so that the resist comes out and you are left with a sharp, clean line.
  10. Finish edges.

I owe much to Michael Katz (my pretend cousin) creator of Jacqard Silk Colors for getting me started as a silk painter. Thanx Michael!
