MILLS COLLEGE EXHIBITION
In 1980, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from New England to claim my identity as an artist.
The journey unfolded over time, with me eventually finding a niche as a maker of hand painted silk tallitot. Eventually, word got out that people could join me in my studio to create their own, one of a kind, tallitot. Over the years I have "midwifed" inumerable tallitot--- with people of all ages.
In 2005 I reclaimed New England as home. The following February I was asked to return to the Bay Area to present at a conference at Mills College celebrating Jewish women's creativity. The best way to do so, it seemed to me, was to exhibit work that women & girls from the area had made with me over the years.
Included are writings of the tallit makers prepared for the exhibition
"The Tallit as Personal Expression: A Sampling of the Creativity of Bay Area Women & Girls of Bay Area Women & Girls."
My gratitude to all who participated---
Nancy Katz
PS I welcome the writings of other tallit makers. Please send me your thoughts.
